It’s no secret – I have a love for fresh flowers. There is nothing quite like a lush floral arrangement to perfectly accent a room. You’ll often notice how I complete an installation or prepare a photoshoot with a simple vase filled to the brim with flowers. They are one of my favorite luxuries for around my own home. So let’s get to talking about my favorite blooms, how to best care for your arrangement, and where to shop locally for the freshest flowers!
When it comes to choosing types of flowers, simple is best in my world. Flowers are an accessory of sorts to your space, so you want to be sure the flowers compliment the design and color scheme, not compete. For this reason, you will see me chose a lot of white! You just can’t go wrong with white flowers. I tend to keep it simple and go for a big vase of one type of flower. I might be partial, but I reach for hydrangeas a lot. Their round, fluffy shape and soft texture is a perfect compliment to a wide range of design styles. A few of my other favorites include tulips, ranunculus, and peonies.
When caring for your flowers, it is important to give the stems a fresh cut. Be mindful to snip the stems on a diagonal, maximizing the flower’s ability to drink up the water. Fill your vase of choice with tepid water, unless you are working with tight blooms that need to open up quickly. For example, a tight bunch of peonies will open quicker if they drink up hot water. Otherwise, stick to lukewarm for your floral friends. It is important to remove all leaves that will fall below the waterline in the vase. Allowing leaves to sit in water will promote bacteria and your flowers will not last as long. Lastly, if you notice the water starts to become cloudy, change it out for new water. While you are at it, give the stems another snip. You will be surprised how much longer your flowers will last with these simple tips.
When it comes to shopping for flowers, the possibilities are endless. Being part of the industry, the local flower market is a great option for me. There is something so special about early mornings and the frigid temperatures, combing the aisles for the perfect bunch. If visiting the flower market isn’t in the cards for you – don’t fret. Never underestimate the power of grocery store flowers. Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s have some GREAT options. These aren’t your typical cheesy grocery store flowers. You can find beautiful seasonal blooms and even locally grown. Another fantastic option is your local farmer’s market. You’ll find the freshest, local blooms here while also supporting your local farmers (a total win-win). If you are in a major pinch, don’t be afraid to look out your own back door! You might be surprised what you can find in your own yard. No flowers blooming? A big vase of branches or foliage can honestly be just as beautiful.
